Our dedicated volunteer sandwich makers play a crucial role in achieving our goals! Your contribution is invaluable, and we thank you for your commitment to safely handling, assembling, storing, and delivering sandwiches. To ensure compliance with food handling regulations, please follow the guidelines below:
Preparing to Assemble Sandwiches
- Sandwich ingredients consist of packaged roasted turkey, cheese, and white or potato bread.
- Avoid using condiments and refrain from cutting sandwiches to minimize allergen exposure.
- Purchase ingredients with the latest expiration date, ensuring they are at least 7 days away from the sandwich delivery date.
- Keep opened meat packages refrigerated for no longer than 3 days.
- Use ingredients within 2 weeks of purchase and refrigerate them immediately after shopping.
Assembling Sandwiches
- To maintain freshness, assemble sandwiches no earlier than Tuesday of the delivery week.
- Cover the assembly area with wax paper, parchment paper, or paper towels.
- Wear a mask, gloves, and ensure long hair is tied back or covered.
- Wash hands before putting on gloves and change gloves if touching anything other than food.
- Each sandwich should include two slices of cheese and two slices of turkey, providing a hearty meal.
- Place each completed sandwich in a sealed sandwich bag.
- Once a loaf's worth of sandwiches (10-12) is assembled, place the individual bags into the original loaf bag and seal it with a twist tie. Refrigerate immediately.
- Label each full loaf bag with the following details:
- "Sandwiches from the Heart"
- "Turkey & Cheese"
- Date assembled
- Number of sandwiches
- Your initials.
- Refrigerate sandwiches until delivery; coolers are not suitable for storage.
- If anyone in your household is ill, refrain from making sandwiches, and keep pets away from the assembly area.
Delivering Sandwiches to the Collection Point
- Transport sandwiches in a cooler with ice packs, ensuring they remain refrigerated.
- Deliver directly to the collection point, maintaining refrigerator cold temperatures.
- Note that coolers maintain existing temperatures and do not chill sandwiches; if additional storage is needed, place sandwiches in the freezer.
- Hand sandwiches to the designated person at the collection point and sign the logbook.
